SUMMARY:WHO KNEW Dyslexia is a Way of Thinking – Documentary Film Free Screening
DESCRIPTION:Free Event Details:\nFormat: Live Zoom screening + extended discussion \nDuration:~75 minutes (33-minute film + conversation) \nDo you think in words or pictures? Do you talk to yourself in your head\, or create an internal film when you read a book? Do you do both? And why does it even matter? \nIt matters to one-third of the population who learn differently from the way they are taught. Too often\, they are incorrectly labelled learning disabled\, when in reality\, they are perfectly capable of learning. \nSo what is dyslexia? Is it a learning disability? Is it just reversing b’s and d’s? Is it struggling to read — or could it actually be a gift? \nWHO KNEW Dyslexia Is a Way of Thinking challenges the status quo. It is an exploration into how the dyslexic mind works — and why understanding it changes everything. The film follows Sue Blyth Hall\, a passionate and empathetic advocate with a strong sense of justice\, who knows everyone is able to learn if they are taught in the way they were born to learn. It is the education system that is disabled by a lack of understanding. Her dream is that parents\, educators\, and communities everywhere understand the cause and the solutions\, so that every child can enjoy learning and fulfil their potential — from day one and for life. \nWhether you are a parent\, educator\, dyslexic adult\, or simply curious about strengths-based approaches to learning differences\, this promises to be a thoughtful and engaging evening.

SUMMARY:Dyslexia: Where Does It Take You? Live Webinar - Malvern\, UK
DESCRIPTION:Why might dyslexia look so different in an eight-year-old\, a twelve-year-old\, a sixteen-year-old and an adult? \nAt eight\, the struggle may centre on learning to read and spell. By twelve\, reading is no longer just something to learn — it’s how you’re expected to learn almost everything else. By sixteen\, independent study\, examinations\, deadlines and organisation bring a whole new set of demands. \nAnd in adulthood? The challenges may extend into higher education\, employment and everyday life. \nThe difficulty hasn’t necessarily become more severe. But the demands have grown — and the challenges can become increasingly layered. \n  \n  \nIn this free\, live conversation\, Richard Whitehead\, Anri Louwrens and Axel Gudmundsson will explore how the experience of dyslexia can change as a person grows up. \nTogether\, we’ll discuss: \n  \nWhy a child who seemed to be coping can suddenly begin to struggle. \nHow new educational expectations can expose difficulties that were previously less visible. \nWhy literacy challenges can become entangled with organisation\, memory\, confidence and independent learning. \nHow earlier experiences can influence the way older learners approach new challenges. \nWhy effective support needs to address the difficulties a person is experiencing now\, not simply those identified years earlier. \nWe’ll also explore how the Davis approach seeks to address different layers of difficulty\, and how rapid\, transformational change is possible at any stage of a person’s learning journey. \nMeet the Panellists \nRichard Whitehead is Director of Davis UK & Ireland\, a Patoss-accredited specialist dyslexia assessor\, and former SENCo at Malvern College\, where he also taught and coordinated the International Baccalaureate Theory of Knowledge programme. A Davis Facilitator and trainer since 2002\, he is the author of Why Tyrannosaurus But Not If? and co-author\, with Ron Davis\, of Counting On Fingers. \nAnri Louwrens is an experienced South African teacher and Project Manager at Davis UK & Ireland. After attending a Davis Learning Power course\, she introduced the techniques into her Grade 8 classroom\, reporting dramatic improvements in examination results and pupil engagement. Inspired by this experience\, she began training as a Davis Facilitator in 2024 and is now approaching qualification. \nAxel Gudmundsson is an Icelandic Davis Facilitator\, Specialist and Workshop Presenter with more than 20 years’ experience. Now based in the UK\, he founded Gifted Dyslexic in 2004 and Davis Dyslexia Association Africa in 2012\, and has also worked in psychotherapy\, publishing and education\, including as a director of a progressive school in South Africa. He brings an international perspective on dyslexia and learning. \nThis won’t be a conventional presentation. Join Richard\, Anri and Axel for an informal\, thought-provoking discussion\, with opportunities for audience questions. \nWhether you’re a parent\, educator\, dyslexic adult or someone supporting neurodivergent learners\, you’re warmly invited. \nFree to attend live. Pre-order the replay for £12.99 (rises to £15 after the event).

In doing so\, we were determined to continue providing richly experiential training. So we explored and implemented numerous ways of ensuring this continued\, even across a digital screen. The feedback from our trainees has been so overwhelmingly positive that we decided to stay with the online model even when the risks from the pandemic started to wane. \n \nThe Gift of Dyslexia online is still the Gift of Dyslexia. This is no dry webinar. SUMMARY:Davis® Learning Strategies Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Are you a teacher struggling to meet the diverse learning needs of your students\, provide individualised instruction\, and maintain engagement among all learners\, particularly for those who appear disinterested or struggle to focus? \n \nOr are you a parent who feels there’s something not quite right about how your child is responding to reading teaching at school — and you want to safeguard your child’s future as a fluent reader and inquisitive learner? \n \nAre you a professional providing educational support  and feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of students requiring assistance with learning difficulties\, and the limited resources available to support them? \n \nWould you like…\n\nMore effective strategies for managing (and even reducing) disruptive behaviour and fostering a positive learning environment in your classroom?\n\n  \n\nSimple\, innovative and effective teaching tools that level the playing field\, significantly reduce the onset of learning difficulties\, and allow ALL children to learn\, regardless of their learning style?\n\n  \n\nGreater awareness and understanding into how bright but struggling learners think\, as you learn how to empower them to become independent and confident in their learning?\n\n \nWhat are the Davis Learning Strategies?\nDavis Learning Strategies (DLS) are a versatile\, creative\, and multisensory pathway to reading fluency and learner self-awareness\, especially tailored for young learners up to the age of 9. \n \nResearch indicates that DLS are effective at: \n \n\npreventing the onset of special educational needs\n\n  \n\nincreasing the likelihood that a child will emerge as a gifted and talented learner.\n\n \nDLS create firm foundations in pre-reading skills\, integrating with a school’s existing reading teaching strategies. DLS is a good complementary solution for children who have so far struggled with basic sight word recognition\, phonic-based reading instruction\, reading comprehension and spelling. \n \nSimply put — it is the missing piece that makes everything else start working.

SUMMARY:Surviving the IB - Online Workshop - Malvern\, UK
DESCRIPTION:An interactive introductory workshop for IB Diploma students \nSix subjects. Internal Assessments. Extended Essay. TOK. CAS. Revision. Deadlines. \n \nThe IB Diploma can be demanding\, particularly when you’re trying to manage several competing priorities while keeping up with increasingly complex material. \nYou might understand something perfectly well in class\, but struggle to remember it later. You might know exactly what an assignment requires\, yet find it almost impossible to get started. \nWhat if understanding how your mind works could help you approach these challenges differently? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDesigned with neurodivergent learners in mind — but open to everyone. \nStudents with dyslexic\, ADHD and other neurodivergent thinking styles may find the demands of the IB particularly challenging. But you don’t need a diagnosis\, or even to identify as neurodivergent\, to benefit from exploring how your mind works and discovering different approaches to learning. \n \nWhat we’ll explore\nThis practical workshop introduces some of the ideas and tools behind Davis Learning Power\, with a particular focus on the challenges IB students face. \n \nYou’ll explore: \n\nConfusion and overwhelm: Why familiar tasks can suddenly become difficult — and a practical technique for responding when confusion builds.\nYour thinking style: How you use words\, pictures and other forms of thinking\, and how recognising your own patterns can help you learn.\nUnderstanding and remembering: Why learning is more than collecting information\, and how making meaningful connections can support understanding and recall.\nMaking the IB more manageable: How these ideas could help with studying\, assignments\, organisation and competing deadlines.\n\n \nWhat makes this different?\nThis isn’t another presentation about study skills. \nYou’ll take part in short experiments\, practical exercises and guided reflection. The emphasis is on discovering what happens when you learn — and identifying approaches you can begin using yourself. \nThere are no assumptions about how every neurodivergent student thinks or learns. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nWho is it for?\nIB Diploma students who would like to understand their learning better\, particularly those who experience difficulties with concentration\, memory\, organisation\, procrastination\, reading or feeling overwhelmed. \n \nYou don’t need a diagnosis of dyslexia\, ADHD or another learning difference to participate. \n \nWhat’s included?\n\nAn approximately three-hour interactive online workshop\, including breaks\nA short individual conversation before the workshop to explore your goals\nPractical exercises and opportunities for reflection\nAn introduction to a Davis technique you can practise independently\nAn opportunity to explore whether further support would be useful\n\n \nWhere could this lead?\nThis is the introductory module of a developing programme designed around the real demands of the IB Diploma. \nFurther modules are being developed to explore understanding and retaining complex material\, getting things done\, managing large assignments and applying strategies to individual IB subjects and deadlines. \nThere is no obligation to continue beyond this workshop. \n\nPlaces are limited to keep the workshop interactive. \nJoin us to discover more about the way you think\, the way you learn and what might help you make the IB work better for you.

They also need a framework for understanding themselves\, recognising change\, making connections between their actions and what happens next\, and learning from their experiences.\nWould you like… \n\nPractical\, creative and multisensory ways to help children develop a stronger awareness of themselves and their surroundings?\nSimple ways to help children understand Self\, Change and Consequence through concrete\, meaningful and experiential activities?\nTools to help children connect their actions with consequences\, develop language for discussing behaviour and social interactions\, and take increasing responsibility for their choices?\nTo build on your existing Davis Learning Strategies practice and give young learners a stronger conceptual foundation for learning\, social understanding and independence?\n\nWhat are the Davis® Learning Strategies — Foundation Concepts? \n  \nThe Davis Learning Strategies — Foundation Concepts Workshop is the second workshop in the Davis Learning Strategies series.\nIt builds on the tools introduced in the Davis Learning Strategies Basic Workshop and is designed for educators and other professionals who have completed the Basic Workshop and are already using the strategies in practice. It is also open to parents and caregivers who have completed the Basic Workshop and are using Davis Learning Strategies with their own child under eight.\nTogether\, these concepts provide a foundation for understanding learning\, experience\, social interactions and personal responsibility.\nThrough guided discussion\, practical demonstrations\, hands-on modelling and supported practice\, you will learn how to introduce these concepts in ways that are concrete\, meaningful and accessible to young learners.\nSimply put — this workshop builds on your Davis Learning Strategies practice to help children \n  \nWho is this workshop for? \nThis workshop is intended for: \n\nEarly-years and primary teachers\nSpecial educational needs and learning-support professionals\nTeaching assistants and other education professionals working with young children\nDavis Learning Strategies practitioners who want to deepen and extend their classroom practice\nParents and caregivers who want to use Davis Learning Strategies with their own child under eight\n\nImportant prerequisite \nParticipants must have: \n\nCompleted the Davis Learning Strategies Basic Workshop\nGained practical experience using the Basic Workshop strategies\n\nThis prerequisite ensures that everyone arrives with the shared knowledge and practical foundation needed for the advanced material. \nWhat you will learn \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have been introduced to: \n\nThe role of Foundation Concepts in learning and development\nAn experiential approach to teaching Self\, Change and Consequence\nWays to help children connect each concept with their own real-life experience\nPractical language and modelling activities for use in the classroom or at home\nHow the three concepts relate to learning\, social awareness and responsibility\nWays to build the concepts into your existing Davis Learning Strategies practice\n\nYou will leave with a structured approach that you can begin applying with the children you teach — or with your own child — supported by the workshop manual and your own hands-on experience of the activities. \nNot yet completed the Basic Workshop? DISCOVER THE DLS BASIC WORKSHOP HERE \n  \nWorkshop format \nLive\, interactive training\nThis is an active and engaging training experience — not a dry webinar. The workshop is designed to recreate the collaborative\, hands-on character of an in-person Davis workshop as closely as possible.\nThe workshop includes: \n\n“Camera-on\, mic-on” video conferencing for real-time interaction\nPresenter demonstrations of the Foundation Concept activities\nHands-on work using clay and other workshop materials\nAdapted pair and small-group practice in breakout rooms\nOpportunities to connect the concepts with your own classroom or home experience\nContent review and Q&A sessions to reinforce learning as you progress\n\nYour Workshop Presenter \nRichard Whitehead \nRichard Whitehead is Director of Davis UK & Ireland and an experienced Davis Facilitator\, trainer and educator. A former SENCo at Malvern College\, he has extensive experience supporting dyslexic and other neurodivergent learners\, working with families and mentoring teachers and education professionals. \nHis experience with parents and younger children includes presenting the How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk parent communication workshop\, which equips parents with practical ways to acknowledge children’s feelings\, encourage cooperation and build respectful relationships. \nRichard combines this family-centred perspective with specialist knowledge of Davis approaches to literacy\, attention\, maths and foundational concepts.\nGive children a strong foundation for learning and life \nAcademic skills matter. But children also need the concepts that enable them to understand where learning happens\, what learning involves and why it has value.\nBy helping children develop an understanding of Self\, Change and Consequence\, educators\, parents and caregivers can give them a framework for learning from experience\, understanding their interactions and taking an increasingly active role in their own lives.\nBuild on your existing Davis Learning Strategies practice — and bring these essential lessons into your classroom or home.
