Development is what’s underneath.\nMost autism interventions focus on what you can see: the meltdown\, the refusal\, the rigid rule-following. Behavioral approaches try to reduce or replace those responses using rewards\, repetition\, and prompts. That can produce short-term results — but the change often doesn’t transfer to new situations\, and it rarely builds the internal understanding that makes real independence possible. \nThe Davis developmental approach asks a different question: what developmental foundations need supporting? Behavior is often a sign that something underneath hasn’t been fully integrated yet. When you address that\, you get change that sticks. \nThe three developmental foundations\nThe Davis approach builds on three sequential stages. Each one depends on the last. \n1. Individuation — “I am Me”\nA grounded sense of self as separate from others and the environment. This underpins body awareness\, sensory regulation\, attention\, and self-regulation. In the Davis Autism Approach\, this is supported through Auditory Orientation and the Concept of Self. Without this foundation\, everything built on top is unstable. \n2. Identity Development\nLearning the concepts that help a person understand themselves and the world — not through repetition\, but through experience. The Davis approach uses clay modelling and real-life activities to make abstract concepts concrete and personally meaningful. This is where understanding actually forms. \n3. Social Integration\nThe ability to connect with others\, read social situations\, and respond flexibly. In Davis\, this stage addresses concepts like Another/Others\, types of relationships\, and a framework for decision-making. It can only develop once Individuation and Identity Development are in place. Also the first step in training to become a licensed Davis Dyslexia Facilitator \nDyslexia isn’t a defect. It’s a different way of thinking.\nYour child is bright\, creative\, and perceptive\, yet reading feels like a battle every single day. Letters move. Words blur. The harder they try\, the more frustrated they get. And despite all the effort\, the gap between what they’re capable of and what they can do on paper just keeps growing. \nIf you support someone with dyslexia\, as a parent\, teacher\, or therapist\, you’ve probably already tried a lot. Phonics programs. Extra tutoring. Specialist assessments. Some things helped a little. Many didn’t. \nThe Davis Gift of Dyslexia® Workshop starts from a different premise entirely: dyslexia isn’t a defect or a structural problem. It stems from a perceptual talent\, the same ability that gives dyslexic individuals exceptional spatial awareness\, creativity\, and three-dimensional thinking. The problem is that no one has shown them how to control it. \nThis workshop gives you the tools to do that. \nWhat makes this different\nThe Davis Method was developed by Ron Davis\, who was labeled severely learning disabled as a child and struggled with reading until age 38\, when he discovered he was causing the symptoms\, and more importantly\, how to stop them. That discovery became the foundation of the Davis Method\, now used by trained facilitators in over 40 countries. \nThe approach works with how dyslexic individuals actually think\, in pictures\, not words. Rather than drilling phonics or forcing memorization\, it uses two core procedures: \nDavis Orientation Counseling gives the individual a way to control disorientation — the perceptual state that causes letters to move\, words to blur\, and confusion to spiral. Once they can turn disorientation off\, they can perceive written language accurately and consistently. \nDavis Symbol Mastery resolves the root cause of reading difficulty — the confusion about the meaning of letters\, words\, and language symbols. Using hands-on clay modeling\, the individual builds a genuine conceptual understanding of each symbol\, eliminating the confusion that triggers disorientation in the first place. \nNo drilling. No repetition for its own sake. No telling them to try harder. SUMMARY:Basic Practice Meeting – Online Asia-Pacific time
DESCRIPTION:This four-day course (5 days if online) is open to students who have completed the Basic Field Assignments. Its purpose is to refine counsellor skills\, and develop increased experiential understanding of dyslexic perception\, thinking\, learning style and process. It provides intensive supervised practice in small groups of the basic Davis procedures and is focused on improving technical skills. This course may be required to be repeated to improve skills for those wishing to pursue licensing as Davis Facilitators. Includes individual Specialist consultation. Note: Basic Field Assignments must be submitted 21 days before workshop starts. This course must be done with the same Specialist who reads and evaluates these Basic Field Assignments.
